In August 2011 Hurricane Irene washed away parts of the Outer Banks, North Carolina. The region around Pea Island had to suffer flooding and a breach through the fragile land. For seven weeks the inhabitants could only reach their homes via ferry which made reconstruction very hard.
A few days after a temporary bridge was opened I’ve visited the island. Life seems to be washed out of Rodanthe, a small town right behind the new bridge. Click here to see what Hurricane Irene has left on the Outer Banks.
